Day at the Beach on Antelope Island

If you think “a day at the beach” only means ocean waves and sandy boardwalks, think again. Nestled in the middle of the Great Salt Lake lies one of Utah’s most unique and otherworldly experiences: Antelope Island State Park. Here, nature, history, and geology combine for a beach day you won’t forget.

The shores of Antelope Island offer more than just a place to relax—they introduce visitors to an ancient wonder. Walk along the beach and you’ll notice the fine, round grains of oolitic sand beneath your feet. These tiny, spherical grains form from calcium carbonate and are unique to few places on Earth. With the distant Wasatch Mountains as your backdrop and the surreal, shallow waters of the Great Salt Lake stretching out to the horizon, it’s a photographer’s dream and a nature lover’s paradise.

Don’t let the brine flies bother you—they’re an essential part of this rich ecosystem and surprisingly non-intrusive. In fact, they help sustain the millions of birds who either call this area home or stop by during their migration. The Great Salt Lake is a critical flyway for species traveling between Canada and Mexico, making birdwatching another unforgettable part of the experience.

Of course, one of the most iconic things to do here is float. Thanks to the lake’s high salt concentration—much higher than the ocean—visitors from around the globe come to experience the natural buoyancy that makes swimming effortless. Whether you’re an international guest or a Utah local, floating in the Great Salt Lake is one of those bucket-list activities that never disappoints.

After your salty dip, you’ll appreciate the on-site showers to rinse off and refresh – though be aware they’re temporarily out of service due to the construction on the Island.  And don’t leave without grabbing a bite at the Island Buffalo Grill located nearby —nothing complements your island adventure better than a fresh bison burger, a nod to the park’s most famous residents. (Be sure to check the park’s website for the latest updates on conditions, closures, and operating hours.)

While many come for the lake, the island itself is teeming with life. Hop in the car or hit the trails to explore further inland. You’ll likely encounter free-roaming bisonpronghorn antelope, and mule deer. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a Big Horn Sheep, known for navigating the island’s rocky ridges.

Antelope Island State Park is more than just a beach—it’s an escape, a science lesson, and a step back in time all rolled into one. With its breathtaking views, unique wildlife, and salty serenity, it’s a reminder that Utah’s inland sea holds more than meets the eye. Just don’t forget your sunscreen, plenty of drinking water, and most importantly, your sense of wonder.
